Background of the Study
Agriculture is a key sector in Nigeria's economy, contributing significantly to employment, GDP, and food security. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in involving youth in agribusiness as a means of addressing youth unemployment and promoting sustainable agricultural practices (Ogunjobi, 2023). Niger State, with its vast land resources and agricultural potential, has seen an increasing number of young people venturing into agribusiness, ranging from crop farming to livestock production. Despite the opportunities in the sector, youth involvement in agriculture remains below its potential due to challenges such as limited access to land, finance, and knowledge (Ogundele, 2023).
The economic impact of youth participation in agribusiness is substantial, as it contributes to increased food production, rural development, and job creation. This study seeks to evaluate how the involvement of youth in agribusiness in Niger State affects both the individuals and the broader local economy.
Statement of the Problem
Although the Nigerian government and various organizations have promoted youth involvement in agribusiness as a solution to unemployment, the actual level of participation in the sector, particularly in Niger State, is low. Several barriers, including lack of financing, outdated farming techniques, and low youth interest, hinder the full engagement of young people in agriculture. This study will assess the extent of youth participation in agribusiness in Niger State and its subsequent economic impact.
Objectives of the Study
- To evaluate the level of youth participation in agribusiness in Niger State.
- To assess the economic impact of youth involvement in agribusiness on the local economy of Niger State.
- To provide recommendations for increasing youth participation in agribusiness to enhance economic growth in Niger State.
Research Questions
- What factors influence the participation of youth in agribusiness in Niger State?
- What is the economic impact of youth involvement in agribusiness on the local economy of Niger State?
- What challenges do young farmers face in Niger State, and how can these challenges be addressed to enhance their participation?
Research Hypotheses
- H0: Youth participation in agribusiness does not significantly impact the local economy of Niger State.
- H0: The lack of access to finance does not significantly hinder youth involvement in agribusiness in Niger State.
- H0: Youth participation in agribusiness does not significantly reduce unemployment rates in Niger State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on young farmers in Niger State and assess their participation in agribusiness. Limitations include the possibility of incomplete data due to the reluctance of young farmers to share information on financial performance or challenges faced.

- Agribusiness: A broad term that refers to all business activities involved in the production, processing, and distribution of agricultural products.
- Youth Participation: The involvement of young individuals, typically between the ages of 18-35, in business, work, or any productive activity.
Economic Impact: The effect of an activity (e.g., youth participation in agribusiness) on the local or national economy, often measured through employment creation, income generation, and GDP growth.
